About Puerto de Santiago

“Modern and traditional, this pretty fishing village has got the holiday balance just right.”

The west coast of Tenerife is becoming increasingly popular with visitors and Puerto de Santiago is no exception. Once a quiet fishing village, this seaside sparkler is all grown up. But it’s lost none of is traditional charm. One thing’s for sure, this tiny town is million miles from hum-drum. Think cliff-top views of the Atlantic Ocean - on a clear day you can see all the way to La Gomera. Local fisherman unloading their sea-salted catch onto the harbour. Restaurants spilling tantalising aromas into the sun-warmed air. And you’ve got Puerto de Santiago down to a T. What could be better than a plateful of fresh-from-the net fish and seafood – enjoyed with the sun on your back and a crisp glass of wine in your hand? This is the life. Looking for a little sand time? There is a small black-sand bay for you to stretch out in – but it is tiny. Real beach lovers are better off visiting nearby Playa la Arena, just five minutes along the coast. Another unmissable day out is a drive to the wonderfully picturesque Masca Valley - arguably one of the most scenic spots on the entire island. Simply irresistible.

Beaches

The alluring black sand beach is charming but quite small. Larger beaches can be found at the nearby Playa de las Arenas and Los Gigantes.

Eating out

There are ample restaurants to choose from in Puerto de Santiago. Fresh fish is always on the menu, often barbecued as to the local style and served with salad and 'mojo picon' - a spicy sauce.

Nightlife

Puerto de Santiago's bars and excellent restaurants provide relaxed, low-key nightlife.

Shopping

Shopping is limited here, but all holiday essentials are provided. For better variety, and a taste of true Tenerife, go to the farmer's market in nearby Alcala on a Wednesday morning.

Local information

The area is quiet and remote but there is plenty to see and do - a visit to the Masca Valley is a must. Once through the pretty village of Santiago del Teide, the views of the Teno Massif's sharp peaks and valleys and the island of La Gomera beyond are stunning.
